Personality

Kakuzu is, at first glance, fairly simple. He is concerned only with money and the acquisition of money. He belongs to Akatsuki only because he can gain money as a member of the organization. He will go out of his way to collect bounties and do other side jobs for cash, if it doesn’t directly conflict with his mission—but he’ll certainly use as much leeway as he can to make sure his money-gathering doesn’t conflict.

But there’s a lot more going on under the surface than simple greed. “The only thing you can depend on in this world is money.” The quote reflects Kakuzu’s views on humanity all too keenly. Money is certainly his obsession, but it is not entirely out of material greed, so much as pure, jaded cynicism that drives Kakuzu to seek wealth. Betrayed by his own people, Kakuzu doesn’t trust anyone, and never will. He is an ancient fighter who has seen too much of the ugly side of human nature to have any interest in anything but that one reliable constant: greed. With money he can get what he wants, plain and simple. Bonds are of no interest; beyond making allies, Kakuzu sees little value in others.

In fact, he is a violent tempered man who will easily kill an ally or partner when he is angered—in fact he has killed all his partners until Hidan, and the only reason Hidan remains alive through their partnership is Hidan’s own odd immortality, not Kakuzu’s restraint.

Despite all this, Kakuzu is actually fairly polite. He admires an enemy with talent and brains—he compliments both Shikamaru and Kakashi’s tactics when he fights them. He himself is quite smart and observant. He does not tend to speak up unnecessarily, and is not overly arrogant—even when fighting those he believes to be weaker, he doesn’t rush headlong to attack, but waits and watches his opponents instead. He is a calculating, cold man, who is capable of moments of brutal, savage, absolutely primal violence and cruelty, and also capable of being polite, quiet, and calculated.

History

Kakuzu was a member of Takigakure (the Waterfall village) back when the hidden villages were being founded. He was given the mission to assassinate the Shodai Hokage of Konoha but failed it, due to Hashirama’s overwhelming Mokuton techniques. He returned to Takigakure, but was harshly and unfairly punished for his failure.

Driven to his limit, he rebelled and escaped the village, killing and taking the hearts of all the village elders as he left, as well as taking with him the prized and forbidden Jiongu (Earth Grudge Fear) technique that allowed him to steal people’s hearts, and hold up to five hearts in his own body—making him something of an immortal, as long as he has his hearts.

Kakuzu has lived 91 years, and at last joined Akatsuki to amass wealth. He was partnered with many people, all of whom he eventually killed, before he was at last partnered with Hidan, whose immortality made him the perfect partner. He and Hidan do not tend to agree on anything, but their fighting styles are well matched, and they were able to capture the two-tails jinchuuriki, as well as one of the twelve guardians of fire, before facing Team Asuma.

Abilities

Kakuzu is a master of the Jiongu technique. With this forbidden jutsu he can steal someone's heart--if he takes a still-living heart, he can implant it in his own body. He can hold up to five hearts. Through this technique he has lived and flourished for almost a century, because when one heart gets old, he can replace it. If someone destroys one of his hearts, he can replace it. He has to be killed five times, to even die. He can also send parts of his body, with a heart attached, away, to function independently, or create four extra thread-bodies, one for each extra heart.

The hearts he steals still retain the chakra affiliation of their original owners, and so Kakuzu is a master of all five elements. Able to use high-level jutsu of any elemental type.
